Vol. XIV, NO. 2 - #22 Summer 2006 September Anniversaries September 1st will mark
two Anniversaries for us at 14
Exercise, Pain and ageing Physical activity can be broken into two basic types: aerobic exercise and strength training. AARP Magazine recently featured an excellent article on the effects of exercise on overall health. The article begins with the statement “Exercise is good for you.” Aerobic exercise stimulates the cardiovascular system which increases the blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body. Increased blood flow results in muscles and organs that are healthier. The brain in particular benefits from exercise by receiving more oxygen and nutrients, and can function better. With an increased blood flow, thinking will be clearer, more creative and sharper. In the aged, short-term memory is enhanced. New tasks will be learned faster and retained longer. Overall, an increased blood flow can be responsible for numerous health benefits. “Strength training”, AARP says, “can reduce and even reverse some of the body’s natural age-related declines in muscle mass and strength…” The Active Stretching Classes that are offered at the Healing Center involve a combination of both of these physical activities. Active Stretching is gently aerobic and certainly gets the blood flowing. Because the stretching we do is active and uses muscle contractions to achieve its results, a certain amount of strengthening of the muscles happens as well. This benefits both the ageing population and younger Active Stretching students. All ages of active stretchers will gain some muscle mass, but more significantly, will, in addition, achieve a balance of muscles that oppose each other (agonists and antagonists). Muscle balance will result in the less likelihood of an injury. Many injuries are the result of muscles being out of balance. The benefits of exercise can be more specific too. We know that exercise can help to ease pain in general, and decrease the pain of arthritis in particular. Also, menopausal women who exercise vigorously experience far fewer hot flashes than those who don’t. As we age, exercise can reduce and even reverse some of the body’s natural age-related declines in muscle mass and strength. Gentle exercise can dramatically speed healing and recovery, which is particularly important as we age. Faster healing means experiencing less pain for a shorter time period. Muscle and joint pain is sometimes accompanied by depression. Together, pain and depression can take its toll on a person’s life. Exercise, we are told, can improve mood. Exercise can reduce muscle and joint pain and may even ease the symptoms of depression. And finally, AARP
reported that “people 50 and older who exercised for at least 30 minutes three
or more days a week actually saved $2,200 a year on medical bills.” Now there’s
a pain that is wonderful to loose. Thank You More Thanks. We want to thank all of your clients, students and friends who voted for us in the Community Newspaper Readers Choice Awards. Bailey Therapeutic

for the Health of It We don’t usually think of the banana as being a particularly special food. But if we look to its possible health benefits, the banana takes on a whole new importance. For energy and stamina, just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout, or extended physical work activities in the house, the garden, or on the job. It makes sense then, that the banana is the number one fruit with many of the world’s leading athletes.
The B6 in bananas helps to regulate blood glucose levels which can affect both mood and energy. Stress raises the metabolic rate and reduces potassium levels. Potassium, a vital mineral supplied by bananas helps normalize the heartbeat and sends oxygen to the brain. It also regulates the body’s water balance. The New England Journal of Medicine reports that bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%! Compared with an apple, bananas have four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. Also high in potassium, it one of the most valuable foods available to us.
In the Works Heads Up! Watch for a special Maynard health event that is being planned for the fall. The Maynard Downtown Merchants are planning a Wellness Night that will take place throughout downtown Maynard, starting at 6 pm. Merchants and service providers in the health and wellness field will participate. The event will be free, with demonstrations, talks/lectures, classes and evaluations offered at various stations throughout Downtown Maynard, similar to the presentation arrangement used by First Night in Boston. Watch for posters and newspaper announcements for the specific date.
